Definition

Erysipeloid is a type of dermatitis caused by bacteria. It resembles erysipelas but tends to occur on the hands rather than on the face. The hands generally appear red and swollen. The condition is often seen in fishermen and meat handlers. Systemic symptoms such as fever and chills are not as common as with erysipelas.

Treatment

Penicillin V potassium is usually the treatment of choice.
